De Lange Conference

De Lange Conference VII: Transforming the Metropolis: Creating Sustainable and Humane Cities

In March 2009, CORRUL partnered with several other organizations at Rice University to host a conference entitled "Transforming the Metropolis: Creating Sustainable and Humane Cities."  The events brought together leaders from around the world to discuss the concept of sustainable and humane cities.  For the first time in history, more than half of the world's population now lives in urban areas.  Click here to view any of the 14 sessions to hear expert opinions on questions like:  What does our urban future promise? How can urbanization provide answers to the ecological, social, and economic issues of the 21st century?

CORRUL would like to recognize the generous sponsorship of the De Lange Endowment at Rice University, given by C. M. Hudspeth and wife, Demaris, in memory of her parents, Albert and Demaris De Lange.

Urban Research Center(2)

Urban Research Center

CORRUL congratulates our colleague Stephen Klineberg, professor of sociology, Rice University on the establishment of the Urban Research Center (URC).  Professor Klineberg will use the URC as a permanent home to the Houston Area Survey (HAS), the nation’s longest running study of a single metropolitan area’s changing economic circumstances, demographic patterns, and public attitudes. Through 27 years of systematic research, these annual surveys have become a valued source of continually updated empirical information.  No other program has been the focus of a research program of this scope.  The new Center will ensure the continuation and expansion of the HAS into the future and enhance its value to the wider community.  As in the past, CORRUL's researchers will continue to collaborate on a regular basis and seek out ways to solve problems together.   Click here to visit the Urban Research Center.
